FUNEN Fionia vulgo Fynen Copperplate. Amsterdam, Blaeu, 1647 - 1649. Ca. 38x50 cm. However Willem Jansz. Blaeu had the idea for a long time to publish a world atlas, he only started with this after he in 1629, closely after the death of J. Hondius II , bought from his inheritance 37 copperplates. This led to to his first World Atlas, Altlantis appendix (1630) with 60 maps. The rivalhood between the Blaeu and the Hondius-Janssonius firms, which engaged for years, reached an climax and would last for many years. It is however strange that the sale of the copperplates took place, but nevertheless the firm Hondius-Janssonius rushed to copy these maps and continued the production of their atlas. Already in 1631 Willem Jansz. Blaeu published his second atlas Appendix theatri A. Ortelii et Atlantis G. Mercatoris ( completion for the Ortelius and Mercator atlasses.) , which has 99 maps and in 1634 followed his Novus Atlas with 159 maps, where for the first time the name of his son Joan I as publisher is mentioned on the titlepage. The last atlas that Willem Jansz. saw completed(1635), exists of 2 parts and a total of 208 maps. After the death of Willem Jansz. Blaeu in 1638, his sons Joan and Cornelis continued the production untill Cornelis died in 1642, Joan continued on his own. Koeman/Krogt AN II [1530:2 ] 2:232.1 (7) . FUNEN Nova et Accurata descriptio totius Fioniæ vulgo Fvnen. Apud. Janssonio-Waesbergios et Mosem Pitt. Copperplate. Contemporary handcoloured engraved map. English edition of the Mercator-Hondius atlas. London, 1680-83 , Johannes Janssonius van Waesbergen, Moses Pitt en Steven Swart. Ca 40x51 cm. The Atlas Maior by Johannes Janssonius served as a basis for the atlas with english text, undertaken by Moses Pitt of London in 1680-83, with the co-publishers J. Janssonius van Waesbergen (c.1616/17-1681) , his sons, and Steven Swart (1641-1683). Both publishers had versions with their own imprint. Their Ambitions were high but the (financial) succes was low, as the enterprise collapsed, due tot financial problems after the fourth volume. The first volume of the English Atlas (northern Europe) was compiled by Thomas Lane, Obadiah Walker and Hugh Todd. The text was printed at Oxford 'at the Theater', The maps are generally printed from reworked plates of Janssonius, and they added the imprint of Janssionius van Waesbergen and Pitt , and to facilitate finding places with the index , the grid of parallels and meridians. In all probability the maps were printed in Amsterdam and shipped to Oxford to be bound with the text.Koeman/Krogt I [1530:1B.2 ] 1:451 (38) Copy on thick paper, without folding. Browned.
